12 Best Recumbent Bike for Tall Person (Reviewed Jan, 2021)

Recumbent exercise bikes are a great option to have good fitness and overall health. Manufacturers pack these exercise bikes with lots of features so that their products can stand out in the market. Sticking to this norm, recumbent bikes often allow their users to move the seat on the machine backwards and forwards. The seat has to be in such a position where the user can extend fully. While this all is simple when you have an average height – when you are tall, finding your best seating position will seem like a lot of trouble.

If you are tall, for example – 6 feet or above, you have a longer inseam. When a recumbent bike is unable to accommodate the full length of your inseam even when you have pushed the seat farther from the front or the pedals, you cannot work your leg muscles properly. Whether you are at home or at the gym, you cannot get an effective workout if you are not able to fit in your legs on your recumbent bike. Manufacturers have addressed this issue by offering more adjustability to the distance between the pedals and seat on many recumbent models.

Height: 6’ 2’’
Weight: 350 lbs

If you are tall like me( 6’ 2’’) and you are looking for an exercise that is mid- tier, you can go for the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike. Even though the labelled maximum weight was 300 lbs, I did not face any issues like wobbling. I would recommend taking help from an expert to get the bike ready for use – as it took me nearly two hours to do so.

What intrigued me the most about the Schwinn 270 is how well the bike has been built. I was able to concentrate on my workout sessions only since the bike stood very solid. To adjust the position of the seat here, I used the adjustment lever here. It had to be pushed down so that the seat was released. The position where I was able to stretch my legs fully, I pulled the lever up. The backrest prevented any strain on my back. Thanks to the programs offered on the console, I was able to set various fitness goals and work on them. Once I downloaded the Schwinn app on my phone, I was able to connect to the machine via Bluetooth for tracking the data of my workouts on my phone or any other compatible device. My feet are size 13 and was comfortable on the left pedals of the Schwinn 270 recumbent.

Tester Profile:

Gender: Man, Woman( Both elderly)
Weight: Man – 210 lbs
Height: Man – 5’10”, Woman – (4’11-1/2”)
Medical conditions: Man – arthritis; Woman – height below 5’

The best thing about the MaxKare Recumbent bike is even though there is a significant height difference between me and my wife, both of us can use this MaxKare machine effectively. It has therefore become an economic option for us.

After going through physical therapy for arthritis, I was searching for a recumbent bike that both of us could use. Additionally, we wanted to avoid getting up in the middle of our workout session. On MaxKare recumbent bike, it is possible. As the rail is at an angle here, you can move the seat all the way forwards by keeping the handle for the latch unlocked here. However, if you are below 5’ – you should place a pillow on your back or avoid using the bike without shoes.

I was able to set the bike up for use in 2 hours thanks to the clear instructions provided. However, it would be best if you took help from an expert. What I like about this bike is that even though I am close to its weight limit, it does not vibrate or wobble uncomfortably during use. With the exception of a low decibel buzz – the bike is noiseless. Even if the dial was not using large fonts on its face, it made a clicking sound while we adjusted the tension. A great convenience offered here is even if the battery-powered console is not functional – this will not have any effect on the operation of this bike.

  • Seat: Padded, ventilated
  • Pedals: Oversized, with plastic straps
  • Display: 2 DualTrack Blue Backlit LCD (with 29 programs)

Features & Considerations
  • Quality design: Thanks to the significant machine footprint, the bike has a sturdy structure, and will have a long service lifespan.
  • Seat: In addition to the vented design of the backrest, the seat is padded. Its ergonomic design will make sure that while seated, you are very comfortable.
  • Tune seat height: If your height is in the taller end of the spectrum, you can move the position of the recumbent seat across the rail under it. Before you adjust the height of the seat, you should get off the bike. Find the optimal height while pushing down on the handle for seat adjustment. To look the seat in place, pull the handle up fully.
  • Pedal adjustment: You can find straps on the pedals of Nautilus R616 so that your feet are locked in place securely. You will need to use athletic shoes with this bike, preferably with a rubber sole. The pedals should keep your toes and knees pointed forwards for maximum efficiency.

This is important to monitor and evaluate your progress over time. With 29 preset workout programs, the console can offer you a variety of workout scenarios and fitness goals. This will always keep you on your toes and eliminate the boring factor.
  • Dual display: Two separate displays are backlit so that you can monitor your workout progress, even if the lighting of your surroundings is not favorable.
  • Flywheel: As you pedal using your legs, you will get a realistic feel as the momentum of the flywheel will be more. The resulting pedal motion will be smooth. This couples with the driving system that is using a belt to make sure that you can workout without bothering anyone around you.

Some Weaknesses
  • Speakers are not of the best quality.
  • The frame cannot be folded here.

Tester Profile:

Gender: Man
Weight: 250 lbs
Height: 6’ 2”

Nautilus R616 recumbent bike can be adjusted for a wide range of user heights – 5’0” – 6’ 7”. However, thanks to the low profile and excellent design – I had sufficient legroom when seated on the reclined position. Even with a 32 inseam, adjusting the seat was fairly convenient. However, it was necessary to get off the frame before the lock for the seat was released. This is recommendation from the manufacturer. The alternative would involve using the floor for a firm foot position. This action would stop the user from falling face-forwards. Even though the plastic seat on the N616 did not have any cushioning, I was comfortable even after long sessions on this recumbent bike.

At 250 lbs, I was close to the weight limit of this recumbent bike. This hardly created any wobbling, even during the hard pedal strokes. The operation was very quiet and smooth, so was the flywheel. Our heart rate was wirelessly relayed to the display of the console. Bluetooth connectivity worked perfectly from the word go. Thanks to the large frame on the 616 recumbent bike, heavier users will no longer be deprived of a low impact work out.

ATIVAFIT Stationary Exercise Bike Tester Profile:

Gender: Male
Height: 6’ 0”

I was Thanks to the X-type foldable design of the frame here – I was able to use this ATIVAFIT exercise bike in both recumbent and upright sitting positions. There was excellent welding all over the machine structure, that too on a powder-coated finish. This was a testament to the care that was put into the design. To make the bike ready for use – assembly took me less than an hour, which is really great. I adjusted the length from the seat to the pedals using the connecting screws. Once this was completed, I found that the backrest can be adjusted at different angles too, as it has a foldable design. This is a really unique feature. The side armrests had foam while padding on the backrest was adequate enough to keep me comfortable. Integrated with non-slip technology, I used the straps to lock myself in for exercise.

The console has an automatic feature for on / off. This is great for conserving energy. What I really like about this bike is it lets me continue pedaling even if I have people near me. This is due to the whisper-quiet operation of the flywheel here. While working out, I opted to set up the resistance bands that were provided during delivery so that I could get a full-body workout.

  • The pulse sensors may not be acting at maximum accuracy.

Tester Profile:

Height: 5’ 7”

With space issues in my home, I was looking for a recumbent bike that will not take up much space but still help me lose some weight. Lanos 2-in-1 semi-recumbent bike seemed like a good choice, and after regularly using it for half to one full hour over the last few months – certainly I do not have any complaints.

The delivered parts were fitted with bolts and therefore I was able to set it up quickly, even though I am not mechanically inclined. I needed some time to adjust to the folding mechanism of the bike using a knob. However, as I was able to store away the bike using the wheels – it was very convenient for me!

For my height, I did not have to make much adjustments to find my seat position. However, I used a pillow on my lower back as the angle between the seat and backrest was uncomfortable for me. If you are below 5 feet – you may find yourself overstretching to reach the pedal for use. Even though the resistance can be changed across 10 levels, level 5 seems more appropriate to begin my workout sessions. What I really like about this bike is how it allows me to exercise without any unwanted noise from the machine, and how comfortable pedaling is for me as I am seated on this 2-in-1 exercise bike from Lanos. I used the AAA batteries that were provided during delivery on the console here. It features a single button only, for reset; besides this – I was able to access a number of basic workout data. The recumbent position on this Lanos bike offers more comfort. As you will be seated reclined here, upper body soreness and fatigue are both minimized. This is why I would recommend this bike to seniors suffering from knee and back issues.

Tester Profile:

Gender: 2 Male, 1 Female
Height: 5’ 10” & 6’ 1”; 5’ 4”

Apart from plugging in some parts and using screws – JEEKEE recumbent exercise bike did not need much assembly after it was delivered. Our testers were in the range of 5’4’ and 6’ 1” – and the bike provided excellent lower back support for all of them. The seat was particularly admired, owing to how easy it was to adjust it and the comfort level after sitting down. This acted as an incentive to use the bike more often. What was particularly appreciated was how the bike does not give away, even when placed on carpets. This is due to the steel frame used in the structure.

Another widely liked feature is how video screens can be put on the holder or propped up against. It is ideal to have a distracting factor while exercising. The consoles look a bit far away; however, its usefulness is evidently cemented as the display brings up data like pulse, speed, miles and time. As you finish up your sets during workouts, the bike indicates so by an “alarm”. This will keep you on your toes during longer workouts. Since the JEEKEE Recumbent bike exerts minimal pressure on the joints of the users, you can easily be involved in a low-impact workout session. This will boost your cardio, build your stamina, develop body muscles, help with weight loss, and improve your endurance. The well-thought out design also offers the scope of physical therapy and recovery training.

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB4850 Bike Tester Profile:

Tested in-house

After delivery, we were able to set up the Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB4850 easily as the manufacturer was kind enough to include all necessary tools with the package. Additionally, the instructions are pretty simple here – except for screwing in the pedals, which was a bit complicated. Even though the frame felt heavy, we found a handle at the rear end and wheels under the front side. Therefore, moving it later was not an issue anymore.

As a number of us tried out this recumbent bike, we made adjustments to the seat height using the lever on the right-hand side, just below the handles attached to the frame of the seat. We found pulse sensors on this pair of handles, which relayed the heart rate to the colored display monitor. This seemed more sophisticated than other consoles we found on recumbent bikes and put up data like RPM, Wattage in addition to the regular pieces of information. As we used the bike for longer durations, the cushioned seat kept us comfortable throughout. As for the preset programs offered here, they seemed interesting enough and we did not customize them during use.

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB4880 Bike Tester Profile:

Tested in-house

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB4880, at first glance, caught our eye thanks to the fact that we do not need any external power source for the machine to operate. Therefore, we were able to make use of the wheels fitted under the front stabilizer bar to move it all around our facility. We were able to get on the bike easily, thanks to the step-through design. The seat offers generous padding, and as we switched up the resistance level – we found that the backrest allows ventilation. As we put the adjusting feature of the bike to test by changing up the inseam length for various of your colleagues, we found that those with an inseam between 28” & 34” were most comfortable.

The monitor of the console could be read easily, and we were able to navigate the controls after a few moments of tinkering. The media shelf integrated here seems very convenient, and so do the speakers that have been built in. What amazed us was even though the machine generates power for the console as we pedal – there is a USB port for charging any device! The maximum user weight that we tested was 297 lbs, and under that weight, this recumbent bike performed very well.

With the lower pedals for our feet, we also find upper pedals for our hands! Thanks to this feature, we have been able to get a workout for our whole body and get rid of calories at the same time.

We found the stabilizer bars at the bottom of the machine to be wider than usual; however, they were able to grip the floor better to balance the steel frame. Both horizontal and vertical adjustments of the padded seat are possible here. We also had to make sure that we could reach the hand pedals and sit comfortably. When we reclined into the seat, we were able to use the fixed set of handlebars on the side of the seat too. They featured pulse sensors, and we were able to visualize performance metrics on the large LCD screen. At 117 lbs, we cannot consider the bike to be lightweight; however, by means of two wheels at the front – we were able to move this bike after use. Tester Profile:

Gender: Female
Height: 6’1”
Medical conditions: Underwent total replacement for both knees

Even though the purchase of Marcy NS-716R was to help me during my rehab from the total replacement of both the knees, other members of my family are very eager to use this bike too. They pedal away aimlessly on the ergonomic designed seat and backrest while watching TV.

I am fully aware that at the price I paid for this bike, I should not expect intensive workouts. This formulated to reality when I tuned up the resistance level, but did not find the higher levels to be more challenging. However, it is just enough for calorie burning cardio workouts. Thanks to the excellent build of the machine , it has been able to withstand rough use. For my 6’1” height, the bike barely accommodated my average-sized feet. The manual for the machine, however, states the maximum user height to be 6’4”. Surely I am left to question their claim. Even though the internal mechanism makes pedaling smooth, the bike may not feel perfect unless you are looking for a low-impact machine for rehabilitation and want to get rid of some calories in the due process.

For anyone suffering from back or knee problems – low impact workouts on recumbent bikes can be a blessing. This illustrates how all recumbent bikes ideally have an ergonomic design. They usually focus on the muscles in the lower region of your body. These exercise bikes offer to and fro adjustment of the seat.
  2. Upright exercise bike: They resemble traditional bicycles, which puts the pedals at a lower level than the seat. You can use handles that are located centrally to the frame and grab onto them. They are ideal for training purposes and for full-body workouts. The riding position uses more body muscles and provides you with a feeling of going uphill & downhill. As you are engaging more muscles – you are getting rid of more calories. However, the angle at which the upright bike seats are fixed may be uncomfortable for tall users.
  3. Spinning bikes: They feature handlebars and the seat at the same level. The feeling is closer to a regular bike. As the seats are raised – you will be leaning on your arms and the knww that is forwards on the pedals should be on top of the spindle of the pedal. If you are an advanced user looking for a full body workout – spin bikes are the way to go. Since they come with w
  4. Semi-recumbent bike: A combo of recumbent and upright exercise bike – pedals are found on the front sider of the machine, and are placed at an angle. Typically, these bikes feature a X-frame, and therefore can be folded before storage or transport. The seat is considerably higher on these bikes. As a result, your riding position will be active. This allows more leg engagement. The option to take up multuole riding positions on a single exercise bikes is why semi-recumbent bikes are popular amongst tall people.

Distance from pedal to the seat

Exercise bikes that are designed for tall folks should have sufficient room to accommodate their legs. Otherwise the experience can be quite uncomfortable. If the height of the seat can be adjusted, these bikes accommodate users of different heights. As most of the recumbent bikes have this feature, you should be making sure that your height is in the adjustable range of the recumbent bike.

Typically, recumbent bikes have large seats and offer generous padding. PU leather is often on top to reduce pressure on spine and tailbone. Backrests are also accompanied with such seats, and they can be vented for airflow while exercising. On several models, the angle of the backrest can be adjusted for tall users too.

Typically, recumbent bikes for tall users should be using a heavy-duty steel frame. It is very likely that their are on the heavier side of the weighing scale. As tall users find the best position on recumbent bikes, their weight is distributed over a wide area. Therefore, the design of recumbent bikes should have a sturdy frame to support this heavy weight for longer durations. They should also have a wide base for more stability. It is a good idea to ensure that the bottom is fitted with stabilizers for optimum grip. When these bars are fitted on the low profile of recumbent bike – issues such as side to side rocking, wobbling or unwanted vibrations are hugely reduced.

If you are tall and want to use a recumbent bike – you should take a look at the handles too. This is because if the handles are at the sides of your seat, they can be used for support while pedaling in a recumbent position. Fixed handlebars that are located more centrally on the frame of recumbent machines are useful for mounting on or off the machine. Some bars allow angled adjustments to the knob connecting the handles to the frame. To ensure effective use by taller individuals, handles are longer and are padded with foam/vinyl to allow multiple grip use. A few models feature rotating handlebars for upper body workout, in addition to the pedals.

Recumbent bikes will allow tall users to sit in a reclined position, with the pedals in front of them. So you need to make sure there is significant clearance between the pedals and the handle of the recumbent bike. This will eliminate any unwanted knocks while pedaling.

The pedals on recumbent bikes for tall users usually employ non-slip technology to keep the feet secured. They should be large and use adjustable straps to ensure that all feet of all sizes can accommodate on them.

On recumbent bikes, you should alway be looking for a colorful display and are fitted with easy-to-understand controls. If you are a tall user, there will be a considerable distance between the console and your seat. This is why large displays are more popular. They should be able to display data like pulse rate, number of calories burnt, RPM, distance traveled etc. On a few models, the display can serve as an odometer too.

High-end models will allow you to toggle the resistance levels electronically, thanks to the jump or up/down buttons.

As you adjust the resistance levels during your workouts, they become more effective thanks to the change in intensity. When recumbent bikes have several resistance levels, you have lots of options to pick as your fitness goal. As you become adjusted to the mid range levels, you can still make further changes in accordance to your strength level. You will be able to customize the techniques for your workout by means of resistance controls that need a power source, or manually- by a rotating knob or towel.

If you are a tall individual, you should be looking for consoles that feature pre-installed workout programs on them, dedicated towards various fitness goals. Nowadays workout programs dedicated to target specific heart beat levels can also be found here.

Irrespective of the situation, the flywheel should always be able to conserve momentum and operate the recumbent bikes noiselessly. The smoothness and comfort level of the pedals is dependent on the flywheel weight. Heavier flywheels provide a more comfortable experience, and usually weigh above 33 pounds.

How to find inseam length

When you want to purchase a recumbent bike, inseam is a important factor to ensure that you fit on the bike. You will need to measure the distance between your heel and the inside of your upper thigh. If you have been able to get this measurement, you should be able to compare this length to the insean ranges that manufacturers often detail on their recumbent bike models. You should remember that if this range is not sufficient, you may find yourself slouched during riding.

You can resort to the video link below for a visual representation of the inseam measurement process.

On recumbent bikes, to find the inseam length, you do the following:

  • Now, use the adjustability features available on your sear to change it’s position until the downward pushing heel is fully extended.
  • Measure the distance between the centre of the pedals to the middle of the seat of the bike.
