12 Best Roller Bike Trainers (Reviewed Jan, 2021)

Cycling on a dependable bike roller will undoubtedly be an astute choice for you while cycling indoors. The simple yet efficient design of roller bike rollers is ideal for usage during your indoor training sessions. The design of a conventional roller features three cylindrically shaped drums, placed parallelly to each other. These drums are connected using a belt. So, when you place your bike above these, it causes these them to revolve underneath the wheels of your bicycle. These rollers help in improving your balance. Also, it may take a considerable amount of time for you to master this technique. So, you are likely to be needing practice before you get to complete grueling interval sessions using these rollers. If you feel like having easy recovery sessions or high-tempo cadence training then rollers are exactly what you need. Moreover, rollers are the perfect solution for warming up before races. According to World Master Point Champion, Andrew Bruce, using roller has been crucial for him in building techniques. “I got some old Tacx rollers and for three weeks I thought they were ridiculous, dangerous, and couldn’t ride them,” said the Scotsman. “But I eventually focused on learning how to ride them. You have 36 cm to ride within so you can’t wobble and you learn the ability to ride where you want to be riding. You can identify someone in the bunch who can ride on the rollers because those who can’t wobble everywhere.”

We’ve used different models of bike roller rollers previously during pre-race preparations. Therefore, we thought about getting one to use at home, after weeks of research, we thought about going for the Feedback Sports Zero-Drive 17277. We were able to have smooth and noise-free workouts. These aluminum drums have widths of 16” and a diameter of 3¼”. Overall, we felt that this unit offered us good value for our money. Moreover, we were able to make adjustments to the wheelbase dimension between 37½ ” – 44″. A top-quality aluminum alloy has been used for designing this roller. Also, we found all other hardware within this roller to be quite durable and capable of withstanding the test of time, we’ve been using the Zero-Drive for almost a year now. The frame on this roller has a powder-coated finish. Whereas, the hardware has been plated with zinc. We were happy with the fact that the hardware on this roller was resistant to corrosion. It also features a top-notch build design. Hence, it offered us good stability to withstand our rigorous workouts. We folded this roller in half and took it with us as we navigated to other places. Lastly, we’d advise you to get a floor mat so that you can get a good indoor setup.

  • Color: Red/ Silver

Features & Considerations
  • Live Ride Technology: This technology will serve you with a real life riding experience. You’ll be able to attain the ideal blend of performance and comfort while using this roller.
  • Quality of Ride: While using this, you’ll be able to achieve fluid cycling training. Your sessions will be much quieter compared to other bike rollers out there.
  • Drivetrain: Provided that you properly maintain the drivetrain of your bike, then your sessions will be smooth & clean, any possible noise will be further reduced. This is because, in most cases, if your bike’s drivetrain isn’t properly serviced then it may end up giving off unnecessary noise.
  • Cadence: You’d be required to maintain the cadence of 65 RPMs and above. Anything below this may result in rides being a bit less smooth for you. This isn’t too much of an issue as you should easily be able to maintain a cadence of 65 RPMs.
  • Stability: The Omnium will undoubtedly serve you with good stability. It is quite secure even when you get out of the saddle & proceed with sprinting. Front-end tripod stands on this roller have been designed to be quite sturdy. It is capable of supporting a huge chunk of your bike’s overall weight.
  • Portability: This roller comes in a small-sized tote bag. You will be able to carry this with you quite easily. Moreover, if you plan on boarding a plane to your next destination, then this bag can easily be accommodated within your regular luggage. Also, you will be able to fit this roller into a portable roller bag. This way you’d be having sufficient space to accommodate your other belongings as well.
  • Tire Wear & Noise-levels: Tires of mountain bikes tend to make more noise compared to that of road bike tires. However, when you use your road or mountain bikes on this bike roller, your performances will be noiseless. Moreover, you should not be worried about the tires on your bike from wearing out too quickly either. Although, if you plan on using the Omnium, specifically for home usage, then it will be best that you use a set of training tires.
  • Wear/ Tear of Roller & Maintenance: Bearings on the Omnium are sufficiently sealed & greased. Therefore, you won’t have to go through the trouble of servicing it. However, you should make it a habit of using this roller with a clean set of tires. Building up of rock, silt, and/or dirt may end up damaging the surface of your bike roller. Although, even after using the roller after my races, I haven’t noticed any significant wear & tear.
  • Internal Progressive Resistance: The Omnium makes use of IPR, otherwise known as internal progressive resistance. This feature serves you with natural cycling experience. The resistance levels are made to be controlled using a magnet. However, you will not be able to make adjustments.
  • MTB & Road bike Compatible: You will be able to use your mountain or road bikes on this roller. This roller will be able to accommodate your bike with wheel sizes between 20” to 29”.
  • Designed for: You can use the Omnium for your pre-race warm-ups or indoor cycling sessions. If you’re into endurance training then you’d notice that the resistance this bike offers is just about right. You would also be able to use this roller for endurance training.
  • Adjustability: If you use a chain-ring that happens to be big enough, then you will be capable of shifting through cassettes for adjusting difficulty levels of watt and range.
  • Convenience: Having an ideal size and lightweightedness makes this roller the ideal choice as you travel.
  • Noise Levels: Omnium will provide you with very quiet performance. For example; we used a conventional 30 mm set of wheels, with these wheels touching the two rear-end drums. It still did not produce too much noise, even while we used it at higher speeds. On a scale of 9+, we’d rate the Omnium producing a noise level of 4, which is good enough.
  • Virtual Power: Unlike many other bike rollers out there, Omnium isn’t a virtual roller. Hence, you will not be able to connect it using either a wired or wireless connection to any of your devices. However, if you plan on using any third-party-owned applications, then you should use a cadence & speed sensor or a power meter.
  • Compatible Applications: Both Zwift & rollerRoad are compatible with the Omnium. Using these applications, you should be able to have an assumption of your speed and power. This is otherwise called Virtual Power. However, this power rating varies between riders and the type of set up you made. Make sure to maintain consistency with your set up & tire pressure. This way you’ll be able to maintain consistency.

Some Weaknesses
  • This roller offers you a limited range of versatility.

User Profile:

Gender: Male
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 200 lbs

So, we’ve bought this roller specifically so that it can be carried around easily. It weighs 14 lbs, so this roller is quite lightweight. It consists of smaller sized cylinders. Nonetheless, the resistance that we got while using this roller was quite impressive. Omnium was able to sustain power ratings of as much as 270 watts, according to manufacturers, it is capable of sustaining even more. Although, we noticed that this roller cannot accommodate lower RPM, specifically intervals below 60 RPM. Also, this roller has a very compact design. We needed around 2 minutes or so to fully set up this bike roller. More importantly, we had no issues while traveling with this roller. Security at the airport didn’t cause any trouble whatsoever as we carried this equipment. Given its compact size, we were able to store this within the airplane’s overhead compartment. Having bought this product, we’ve been thoroughly satisfied. We’d recommend this product if you plan on traveling at ease.

How do I set up the Feedback Sports Omnium roller?

When it comes to setting up this roller, this should not be an issue at all. You’ll be able to unfold this roller with ease and make adjustments to its length and quite easily have your bike mounted on this. As for the rear-end bike wheel accommodation, it’ll sit on top of 2 of the drums, similar to a set of rollers. Whereas, the front-end fork would mount into the fork mount. This fork mount can support forks of various sizes, you will also be able to accommodate a thru-axle with the adapter. The stability of the front-end is ensured by the 2 legs that are designed to remain folded out from the stand. You won’t be needing more than 2 minutes or so for setting up this bike roller. It really is that straightforward.

# Alloy made Roller

3. Kreitler: Available in a range of Drumsets, Includes a Regular Frame & Belt, Can Accommodate Wide Selection of Wheel-bases

Kreitler TN7000-p
  • Type: Cadence Roller
  • Frame: Steel
  • Usage: Indoor/ Outdoor
  • Weight: 14 lbs
  • Dimension: 20″ x 15″ x 15″
  • Foldability: Folds in Half
  • Roller Width: 15”
  • Wheelbase Size: 38″ to 42″
  • Accommodates With: Wheelbases
  • Drum Diameter: 4.5″, 3.0″, 2.25″
  • Color: Black/ Silver

Features & Considerations
  • Roller Drum Diameters & Widths: This roller comes in 3 different drum diameters: (i) 2.25” – This will serve you with higher levels of resistance. Resistance you’ll be able to achieve while using this roller is approximately 90% more than that of the 4.5” variant. You should only choose the 2.25” drum size if you’re strong enough and have been using bike rollers for a long time. These rollers should be ideal for pre-race sprint warm-ups or interval training sessions. Only if your average speeds are above 20 to 25 mph during solo road bikes riding sessions, then you should be going for the 2.25” drums. Otherwise, you should stick to the 3.0” or 4.5” modules. (ii) 3” – The 3” module will serve you with 40% more resistance in comparison with the 4.5” variant. This will enable you to carry out intensified workouts without using the Headwind fan. If you prefer having greater resistance levels to that of the 4.5” drum sizes, then you should for the 3”. It also saves you from the trouble of having to buy a headwind fan. (iii) 4.5” – You should choose the 4.5” drum size provided that you happen to be relatively new to using bike rollers. This will serve you with significantly low levels of resistance. You should be able to use this with larger gear while keeping the wheel speed high too by giving little effort. If you cycle at higher speeds, then you will be able to maintain balance better; moreover, you’ll obtain an enhanced coasting effect even if it means that you pause pedaling for a moment.
  • Polycarbonate-made vs. Alloy-made End-caps: If you used the alloy-made rollers, then you’d be able to choose between 3 different sizes, these are: (i) 4.5” (ii) 3.0” (iii) 2.25”. Whereas; the challenger rollers can only provide you with 4.5” ones. The alloy-made rollers consist of end-caps that are made from alloy. On the other hand, challenger rollers feature polycarbonate-made end-caps. If you consider weight, the ones having polycarbonate-made end-caps weigh more. Also, they’ll help you to create greater momentum within the rollers. Moreover; the coasting effect will be higher as well. These poly-made caps offer better quality and offer durability as well. Whereas, the alloy-made end-caps can maintain momentum even better than poly-made ones. Furthermore, alloy-made caps also happen to be more durable. (Note: You should go for alloy-made end caps if you happen to use the headwind fan or a flywheel regularly. This is because the aforementioned accessories tend to cause a significant amount of tension within the end-caps belt-grooves. Although, there shouldn’t be any issues if you plan on using either a headwind fan or a flywheel with either the 4.5”, alloy-made, or challenger drum sets.)
  • Hot-Dog vs. Standard Drums: Hot-Dog drums have a width of 10”. On the other hand, standard drums have a width of 15”. You’ll find hot-dog drums in diameters of (i) 4.5” (ii) 3.0” (iii) 2.25”. Only if you happen to be a seasoned roller user, prefer having a challenge when using the roller, or want portability then hot-dog drums should be chosen over the standard modules. You should go for the standard ones if you’re relatively new to roller riding.
  • Kompact vs. Standard Frames: (i) Kompact Frames: If you’re someone who likes to travel around a lot, then kompact designed frames are just what you need. Also, as the name suggests, you’ll be able to fold this frame compactly. These frames are compatible with wheelbases ranging between 38” to 42”. You can only use this with the headwind fan, you’ll not be able to use the flywheel. (ii) Standard Frames: Unlike Kompact frames, these works with all sets of Kreitier drums diameters, namely: (i) 4.5” (ii) 3.0” (iii) 2.25”. Furthermore, these frames are capable of accommodating a wider range of wheelbases. Lastly, you’d find two different extension kits for these frames. So, bikes that feature a longer frame, such as; tandems & recumbent bikes can be accommodated.
  • Headwind Fan: You can use this fan as a resistance adjusting unit. This will serve you with a wider range of resistance adjusting choice based on how much of the air intel you open. You can choose to aim the breeze either directly at yourself or away from yourself while using the roller.
  • Flywheel: This will help you to increase the momentum of the roller simply by adding mass. Upon addition of momentum, there would be a smoothing effect with each pedaling stroke. This will ensure that you have a road-biking feel. Moreover, a flywheel also aids in adding resistance. However, this is significantly less than that of a headwind fan.
  • Fork Stand: It will come in handy when you plan on going for maximum spinning, drills using single-legs, or if you want to share your roller with another person who is rather new to using these rollers.

Some Weaknesses
  • This alloy version of the roller has a limited resistance. So, this should be better suited for your mild workout sessions.

We wanted to get ourselves an alloy-based bike roller, so; we’ve been researching for months as to which should be the ideal choice of roller. With everything taken under consideration, we chose the Kreitler TN7000-p roller. Kreitler’s bike rollers are well renowned for their simplistic design and durability, the TN7000-p did not disappoint us. However, we had to pay a premium for this roller. We are quite certain about the fact that given its durability, this roller will last for our lifetime. This roller has been used for close to a year for almost every day and we must say, the quality of the product is quite satisfactory indeed. It is the closest we got to the feel of using a road bike. This roller has definitely helped us to stay in shape while being indoors during COVID. We’d recommend you to replace the set of tires on your bike with roller tires while using the roller. This way there won’t be any unnecessary wear and tear on your regular street tires. Moreover, the only significant noise that we noticed while using this roller is that of our bike’s drivetrain. Once we were done using this roller, we were easily able to fold this unit in half for easy storage. If you’re new to using bike rollers then you may need months for getting used to it. We can assure you that this roller won’t disappoint you.

It’s been almost 8 months since we’ve been using the Elite Arion roller and we must say that its performance has been satisfactory. These rollers came assembled within the packaging. We were also able to store and transport these rollers quite easily, as it can be folded very conveniently. Using our road bike tires there wasn’t any noticeable noise as we used this roller. Initially, we needed to get used to this roller. However, we seemed to have got the hang of it, in minutes. Using the Arion helped us in improving our technique and balance as well. We carried out intense cycling sessions using the Arion. It offered us connectivity features, stability, and is quite versatile as well. Also, we’ve used both our road and mountain bike on this roller. It has a power rating of 400 watts and a speed of around 35 km/h. The fact that it offers Bluetooth connectivity helped us in managing resistance, cadence, and speed quite conveniently, simply by using the Misuro B+ sensor (isn’t included with the packaging). Moreover, the usage of this bike roller helped us in riding over the bike on ice a whole lot easier. Lastly, it offered us adaptability in 10 varying positions. If you’re looking for a bike roller that offers good quality and is available for an affordable price, then you should not be looking any further.

Accuracy of power as opposed to your cycling speeds

The Arion roller will be able to serve you with decent levels of power accuracy. Similar to most other rollers, you’ll be needed to calibrate it for getting accurate values. Nonetheless, we advise you to make use of a power meter. If you do not calibrate it properly, then you may end up getting inaccurate results.

We’ve been using the Arion Mag for over 5 years now, so far we did not have to take it for any maintenance. We’ve simply tightened a few bolts. It features solid construction. This roller will serve you with magnetic resistance, we switched between 3 levels. It will undoubtedly help you to have an effective workout session. Initially, we put the roller between a door frame, while using the door frame to help us balance properly. After a few months of usage, we got the hang of it. Rollers on this roller are made from flared cylinders. So, this will let you know when your tires are drifting by giving off squeaky noise. This will give you sufficient time to prevent falling over. Compared to other bike rollers, the Arion Mag is quieter. Overall, this is the closest we got to an experience similar to riding our outdoor road bike. We had set up our very own riding station in our basement, containing a rubber-made floor mat so that the floor doesn’t get drenched in sweat, a properly functioning fan to keep us cool during workouts and there were a hand towel and water bottle as well. Moreover, we made sure to wear sweatbands as well.

We bought this bike roller 4 months back, it is used for about 30 minutes, 4 days a week. This roller has served us with everything we could have asked for in a bike roller. For setting it up, we did not face any issues. This roller came assembled within the packaging. However, it comes folded down. Necessary instructions for measuring our bike and properly setting up the length of the rollers were pretty straight forward. This roller is collapsible, also, its design made it easier for us to store this roller. Our riding sessions were noiseless and very smooth at the same time. Moreover, we’ve set up the Misuro B+ sensors, setting it up was quite easy, to say the least. Now, we’re able to get our workout stats directly on our iPhones & iPads. Overall, we’ve found this roller to be a good tool for training.

Previously we’ve used the Tacx Antares T1000. We had a pretty good experience while using the Antares. So, we decided to go for the Tacx Galaxia T1100 this time around. Just as the manufacturers proclaim, the Galaxia is well built and functions pretty well. This roller features tapered rollers. So, this will help in keeping your bike centered. Although, there aren’t any bumpers on the sides. We needed to be careful enough so that we didn’t ride and slip off the edges accidentally. We’ve been using this roller for more than 6 months now and my pedaling technique has improved significantly. I use this roller for 4 to 5 days a week. My bicycle is a professional road bike, generally, I cycle at higher gears, this enables me to have efficient workout sessions. Although, we did not notice high levels of resistance from this roller. If you have issues with your pedaling technique, then this roller will aid you to correct that. I was able to correct my pedaling technique by maintaining a complete circle. Previously, I used to pedal in squares that resulted in losing balance. We did not have any issues while assembling this roller. It can be folded and stored quite easily. We are satisfied with how this roller has performed so far. As it stands, the Tacx Galaxia T1100 shouldn’t have any issues in withstanding the test of time and will endure for years to come.

We’ve decided to buy a roller for indoor use last winter to keep ourselves active and occupied. After months of research, we chose the Soozier roller. The packaging was done quite well, to say the least, and it did not take a lot for them to deliver the roller. We did not have to go through the rigorous process of going through extensive assembly. The wrench that came along with the packaging did the job for us, for the little bit of assembly that was necessary. Once I started using the roller I felt a bit shaky. However, after 3 or 4 sessions later, it got really easy for me. We decided to place this roller within our narrow hallway. This had enabled me to steady myself even when I wobbled a bit during the first few sessions. I’ve been carrying out regular workouts using this roller for a duration of about 45 minutes or so and I must say, it has been very effective indeed. Using this roller has undoubtedly been worth it. If you want a roller that is built well and comes at a very reasonable price then the Soozier is exactly what you need.

Features you should be looking for while buying a roller bike roller

I. Quality of Construction

Similar to any other product, quality of construction is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of a bike roller. As you shall be using this equipment for your intense training regimes. Rollers need to have the capability of accommodating your bike’s weight as well as yours for a significant amount of time as you keep moving. The components that you need to give special attention to are :

(i) Rollers: These are the most significant part, premium quality rollers are designed using aluminum or high-density polyethylene. Rollers made from HDPE do work quite well and it’ll make sure that the noise levels from your workouts are kept low. However, this may add a little bit of vibration during sessions.

II. Material & Drum Design

Varying models of rollers from different manufacturers are made from different types of materials and feature different drum designs. The shape of the drums can either be:

I. Parabolic: Such as Garmin Tacx Antares or Garmin Tacx Galaxia features a design that is bigger on the outside nearer to the frame. Whereas, it is smaller in the middle portion. This enables your bike to be kept centered so that your bike doesn’t come off from these rollers.

Sizes of drums play a significant role in the amount of resistance that you’ll achieve. Drums are designed from materials such as
(i) Aluminum
(ii) Hard-wearing Plastic; E.g. Polyethylene

Type of training that you’re into and how you contemplate riding makes the materials of these drums to be a crucial factor.

What Determines the Resistance?

The size of the rollers plays a huge role in determining the resistance that a bike roller can offer.

Drum size ∝ 1/resistance

Therefore, the bigger the size of the drums; the lower is the levels of resistance. Hence, a lesser resistance makes it easier for you to keep your bike’s wheel spinning at higher speed, without requiring you to put in too much effort.

To conclude, if the drum size is smaller, it ends up creating greater resistance. Also, this will result in your bike’s tire wearing out much faster. If you plan on doing interval training or quick sprints for your warm-up sessions, then smaller sized drums should be better suited for you.

If you want a roller that has a smaller drum size, then the Kreitler TN7000-p should be a good choice for you.

III. For Wheel Sizes

The majority of rollers can accommodate road bikes having wheel sizes between 26” to 29”. Also, you’ll be able to make adjustments to the front-end drum, enabling you to fit this into your bike’s frame size. This front end drum is supposed to be positioned right in front of your bike’s front axle.

IV. Wheelbase

You’ll only need to make necessary adjustments to rollers, once. Although, you will be required to adjust the wheels within these bike rollers every time you use the bike roller itself. Majority of the bike rollers that you’ll find out there are quite straightforward to be set up. Also, you’ll be able to adjust these to your bike’s wheelbase within minutes. You must buy a roller that is constructed well. Because this will enable the roller to accommodate various types of bikes.

How to set up a conventional bike roller?

For regular bike rollers, you’ll be needing a wrench and just about a few minutes of your time.

  1. Position your bike within these rollers.
  2. Make adjustments to the front drum.
  3. Ensure that the drum is positioned a little bit forward from the front hub.

Note: Make proper adjustments to the drums so that you do not ride off, in front of these rollers.

Even if you contemplate using hybrid rollers, the process of setting up these rollers are quite straightforward.

How to set up a hybrid bike roller?
  1. Firstly, similar to conventional bike rollers, adjust the roller so that it is in sync with your frame size.
  2. Proceed with removing the front-end wheel that is connected using the fork to the integrated drop-outs.
  3. These rollers would be able to support most categories of your bikes. Lastly, for various types of forks, make sure to include adapters.

Bike rollers such as the Feedback Sports Omnium features a slightly different setup. It features a wheelbase for the front-end wheel of your bike. Therefore, you’ll be required to remove the front-end wheel of your bike and connect it to the wheelbase. This configuration serves you with more stability.

V. Build Design & Cost

Build quality of a bike roller will determine how efficiently this will work for you and how long this would last. E.g. Kreitler KT-10001 requires you to pay a premium. However, this model of roller won’t wear and tear easily. Neither would it fall apart too easily or corrode.

VI. Storage & Compact Design

The compact design of the roller makes it convenient for you to store it. Also, you’ll be able to transport this bike roller for warm-ups during the days of your race. If you have limited space then choosing a compact design of roller should be a clever choice. However, you may be required to pay more for rollers that offer a compact design.

These space-saving rollers can generally be folded in half, right along the center. In between the front and rear-end drums of the roller. If you choose the Garmin Tacx Antares, then it’ll be possible for you to retract the roller into a significantly more compact size & shape.

Your regular design of bike rollers is designed to have solid construction. Hence, these won’t be able to offer you portability.

Rather, if you go for a bike roller that is designed using hard-wearing plastic, then you’ll be getting yourself a compact and portable roller. Moreover, since these also happen to be quite lightweight, so; you’ll be able to transport these with ease.

Lastly, hybrid rollers should offer you with the most compactness. Because these don’t consist of a drum at the front end.

My name is Dion Lewis. I’ve been cycling since my childhood. When I was in high school, I started racing in our local competitions. In my college life, I took a part-time job in a bicycle shop and I learned how to repair and maintain bicycles professionally. Though I love racing, mountain biking is another thing I do frequently. My friends, neighbors, and colleagues treat me as an avid rider and take my suggestions while they plan for a new bike or bike gear.
