In general, there are mainly three contact points between your bike and you. These are hands, saddle, and feet. So; when it comes to grips for your hand and saddle, the choices may be a bit more straight-forward, and more importantly; you can easily swap them out for other ones.

However; this is not as uncomplicated when it comes to choosing a pedal. Moreover; you’d also need to decide on whether you’d choose a flat or clip-less pedal for your enduro bikes.  Furthermore; each pedal has a specialty, so; you should decide on your style of riding and type of trail first and foremost when contemplating purchasing a pair of pedals.

Buying guide: Enduro Riding Pedals

Classifications of pedals to take into consideration

You should have a wide variety of bike pedals to choose from. Where each pedal type of pedal possesses a specialty. So; each of these is tailor-made to cater to the type of trail you venture into and also; your style of riding. Therefore; the type of riding you prefer doing should be the deciding factor when it comes to choosing your bike pedal. Furthermore; let’s just take into consideration that you happen to own an enduro bike. So; you have to choose to ride using either between a clip-less/clip-in or flat/platform pedal. Hence, we shall be covering all necessary factors and things you should consider while buying these pedals.

The major difference between clip-in and clips

So; before the introduction of modern clip-less pedals, that uses a cleat to attach on the bottom of your shoe. There used were pedals that used to hold your foot in place using toe-cages. Moreover; one major drawback of using these pedals with toe-cages was, it was made the process of getting in and taking out your foot from these cages, quite difficult, while you needed to step down. Thus; this is where new models of clip-less pedals were manufactured. These clip-less models do not have a cage for your foot to slip into. Hence the name clip-less is used when referring to these pedals.

Difference between Clip-less, Flat and Clip-Flat pedals

A lot depends on whether you want to attach your feet into these pedals or do you want to stand firmly on top of these. So; you’d have positives and negatives upon choosing each of the mentioned styles above. Thus; we’d recommend you try out all these styles of bike pedals and choose one that you feel is convenient for you. Moreover; if the whole idea of having to clip-in sounds like a challenging task for you. But you’d much rather ease into the whole process, then we’d recommend you to use a clip-flat pedal. So; a clip-flat has features of a clip-less pedal on one side. Whereas; on the other side, it has features of a flat pedal. Also; you can choose an adjustable clip-less pedal, which would allow you to get out of it rather quickly and easily.

Clip-less pedals

A few years ago, thinking about clipping into a mountain bike pedal might’ve sounded absurd. However; that has surely changed over the years. So; nowadays, it rather seems like an anomaly to not see your mountain bikes equipped with clip-less pedals. So; the advantage of having your foot attached to the pedal is, it increases your overall control and efficiency.

Also; we’ve got firsthand experience of this while fitting clip-less pedals to our mountain bike. However; the thought and experience of having your foot attached to the pedal can be quite an intimidating feeling, but this should do away after you use the pedal for a while.

Although; as time went by and with an advance in research done for manufacturing, more secured and user-friendly bike pedals have been released by manufacturers. Thus; if we make a comparison. For today’s clip-less bike pedals, releasing your foot simply by twisting it is an easier process.

Rather than the medieval design of the old cage design, where you had to go through the process of pulling your foot out of the cage. Furthermore; as a matter of fact, we tested it out ourselves and after having interviewed many users. So; we found that it would be easier and faster for you to take you to place your foot to the ground while using clip-less pedals, in comparison to flat pedals.

Moreover; the shoes that you are required to use for clip-less bike pedals recesses on its sole, thus; this allows it to attach to the cleats. Below; we have made a summary of the pros and cons of using clip-less bike pedals

Advantages

  • Efficiency
  • More control
  • Enhanced power with each pedaling stroke
  • Gives you the option of putting your foot on the same position of the pedal every time

Disadvantages

  • Needs time to get a hold of using it
  • It can initially delay getting your foot down on the ground
  • The time required to set your foot on the pedal correctly and properly may take time

Flat pedals

With the progression of time, flat pedals have also progressed to be more user-friendly. Moreover; contemporary style has been introduced to everyone, which has superior traction and these pedals are also compatible with your adhesive-soled shoes. Thus; giving you more credence and command while using your bike. Some of the reason for and against purchasing a flat bike pedal has been mentioned below

Advantages

  • You can set off with your bike quickly
  • For flat pedals, you don’t have to learn, how to use it
  • It allows you to learn in applying appropriate pedal pressure with your feet
  • So; if you plan on going for new bike controlling skills and to try out new techniques on different terrains, then flat pedals are ideal for you

Disadvantages

  • While driving through rough terrains feet can bounce off
  • A foot cannot be used to pull up on pedals while you climb and jump, thus; reducing your efficiency

Choosing either of the bike pedals, from the mentioned categories would have its strengths and weaknesses. Thus; we advise you to use one of these pedals firsthand for a few days. Otherwise; you can also ask for user-experience from one of your friends or acquaintance who’s into cycling to ensure you choose a pedal that suits you well. However; in the end, it’s for you to choose on which one ticks all the boxes.

Other factors and accessories to take into consideration for your enduro bike’s clip-less pedals

If you’ve decided on choosing a clip-less bike pedal for your enduro bike, then you’re in luck. Because; we shall be discussing the details that you should take into consideration while before picking your desired bike pedal.

Cleats

The clip-less pedal that you buy will include cleats. Thus; you don’t have to go through the burden of having to buy them individually. Moreover; considering the case of some cleats, you can easily customize them by reversing these or mounting them on opposite feet. Also; you would find many brands of pedals out there, for which, you can alter their release and float properties. Hence; allowing you to get a tailored experience.

Intended usage

The most important question that you should ask yourself is “What type of riding am I going to do?” Also; if you happen to be a rider, who ventures into cross-country, then you won’t be requiring pedals with larger surface areas. Thus; you should choose a pedal having a smaller stature and one which is very light-weight.

However; if you’re into aggressive trail-riding and is usually in the mood to go beyond the limits. Then, you’d be profited if you expand the surface beneath the sole of your shoe. Hence; a mini platform is something that you may take into consideration. Because; these would provide you with a fast entrance and also give you a solid base for each of your pedal strokes.

Furthermore; if you’re more of an aggressive and gravity aligned rider, then we’d suggest you go for the bigger platform, pin overloaded pedals. But please do keep in mind that this is just a basic walk-through. We’d recommend that you continue reading to find out which bike pedal would suit you best.

The adjust-ability of release tension

The most widely discussed type of pedal adjustment that you’ll hear about is the release tension. Also; we feel that this is very important. So; choosing a bike pedal that would offer you the right amount of release tension is crucial in making you feel more confident while riding. Moreover; there are some bike pedal manufacturers out there, that would supply you with a one workable tension pedal for all products. After having tested this out, we felt that this works well in most cases.

However; riders whose weight or strength range on either end of the spectrum would prefer having the option of custom-built release tension. Another important aspect to take into consideration is the adjust-ability of the float. So; the float refers to how much further you’d have to move your heel for it to instigate the release. Thus; most of the clip-less pedals that we’ve review would offer you a degree of float adjustment. Hence this would be done either by changing the cleats or altering their mounting orientation.

You should also take into consideration, the lateral float. So; you’d find some pedals that would permit you to move the entirety of your foot from one side to the other. However; that’s only by a few millimeters. Now; you may find this to be a bit disturbing, but; this is very favorable for your knees.

Height of profile

The height of the profile can be defined as the distance that you can measure from one surface of the bike’s pedal to the other. Therefore; the lower the height of the profile, the lower you can sit on your bike, at their accepted saddle position. Moreover; this would provide you with a lower center of gravity also; at the same time diminish the chances of you striking your pedal either on any trail feature or a rock.

Q-Factor

This defines the width of your stance on the bike. So; this is measured from the center of one of the pedal cleats to the center of the other pedal cleat. Hence this has a huge role to play. Therefore; what it does is, it decides how comfortably your ankles, knees, and hips are placed, while you pedal. Moreover; this is affected by the dimension of your pedal, the crank, and lastly the bottom bracket. Thus; if you either own a road or cross bike with slender tire to workaround, then these have a would usually have a smaller Q-factor in comparison with mountain bikes.

So; the major advantage of having a wider Q-factor is, it would give you greater grip from side-to-side, while you go are cornering or go out for a sprint. Moreover; this can be advantageous if you happen to own a downhill mountain bike. However; the major downside is that the wider the Q-factor, the likelier you are to clip a pedal while taking a turn. Additionally; a greater Q-factor means, the overall pedaling efficiency would also decrease slightly. Lastly; after having tested out many bike pedals, we’ve concluded that a lesser Q-factor means the efficiency would be greater.

Shoe

While buying shoes, you should keep in mind that only a certain category of shoe is designed to be compatible with a given category of pedals. Therefore; we’d advise you to take into consideration the type of shoe and pedal you want to purchase, simultaneously. Also; if you tend to get a bit unruly on your bike, then we advise you to buy a good quality shoe and pedal.

Enduro mountain bike shoes

Shoes designed for enduro mountain bikes are built for pedal efficiency. Also; the manufacturers design these shoes with factors such as walkability and foot protection in mind. Moreover; you’ll generally see lugged soles or gummed rubbers, rather than a robust plastic out-sole you’d usually see on cross country shoes. Furthermore; the size of the mid-sole ranges from approximately 9.6 to 10.6 centimeters.

In the table below; you will find some of the most sought-after attributes of clip-less shoe pedals.

Features & Considerations:

  • Usage: If you’re used to using SPD pedals, then the Mallet E would be offering your with a different feel, compared to other SPD pedals. So; where other clipless pedals usually give out a distinct clicking sound upon entry and exit. Whereas; as for the Mallet E that’s not entirely the case when you’re clipping out. Also; these pedals have a 6º  float. So; this extra float means, you’d feel as though you’re using a flat set of pedals since you’d be allowed more foot positions. Thus; this would be an advantage for you when you’re clearing through a tricky section of a trail.
  • Durability: We have been using the Mallet E pedals for months now, also; these pair of pedals have survived by defying atrocious weather conditions.  Although; the aluminum body of the pedal would have its fair amount of scratches after having come into contact with various surfaces. However; all the pins that come along with the pedal have seemed to have survived. Also; we’d recommend you use grease on your spindles while an of you travel in a wet climate condition.
  • Adaptability: These CrankBrothers pedals have less adjustability compared to other modules of pedals out there. Furthermore; all variants of CrankBrothers would be able to offer you 6º of float. Moreover; it has an adjustable 15º to 20º release angles if you use standard cleats. Also; these pedals come along with 1 or 2 mm thick traction pads. Additionally; you can easily adjust the level of contact with your shoe by switching between these traction pads. Although; it would provide you with the efficiency for a clipless pedal and assurance of a platform pedal. Also; this pedal is specially designed for you provided that you’re a bit wary of adding some extra pounds. Lastly; this pedal is a perfect fit for enduro racing or mountain biking.
  • Pedal platform: The Mallet E performs expertly when you want to disengage from the pedal mechanism. Although; it won’t be able to offer you the traction and solidity if compared to a platform-style pedal.
  • Width of the pedal: The width of this platform is bang-on. So; it’d allow you to comfortably place your foot while half-clipped in or half-clipped out. Also; this pedal is designed in such a way so that it performs well even in muddy conditions. Moreover; you don’t have to worry about either getting in or out of the pedals even when you’re traveling in muddy conditions.
  • Ability to shed mud: This pedal is built very well to provide resistance against mud. Moreover; the platform moderately reduces effectiveness in harsh weather conditions.
  • Adjusting release tension: There’s no way that you’d be able to adjust the release tension of the Mallets, but their design means its nearly impossible for you to release upwards. Moreover; the angle at which you can disengage the cleats can be adjusted between 15º or 20º. Also; after trying out both options, we preferred using 15º. Because; we felt the 20º cleats disengagement took quite a lot of motion to escape.

Some drawbacks:

  • Size: If you have a very big foot then this pedal might not be best suited for you. Because; the platform of this pedal is a bit on the smaller size, compared to many other clip-less pedals.

So; you can consider the Crank Brothers Mallet E pedals to be one of the finest gravity foot holding pedals out there. Moreover; we have spoken with a lot of high-profile riders and they’ve given rave reviews for this bike pedal. Although; Mallet E has a smaller-sized platform, but it still has adjustable shims and pins. Hence these features make Mallet E an outstanding lightweight Enduro bicycle pedal.

As is the case with all Crank brothers bike pedals. Each model has a center with a simple and efficacious stainless steel Eggbeater design. Thus; you can easily clip-in your foot in the pedal, from all angles, even if your foot has a lot of dirt underneath it. However; for these pedals, the spring tension is fixed. But; you can choose different cleats or switch these from left to right, which would be able to give you a 0-10º float. Also; a release angle of 10-20º, so making it the most adjustable pedal available out there.

Furthermore; you can also adjust the shoe-to-pedal clearance with the shims, underneath the cleats, or the replaceable traction pads, that are slotted into the anodized body. Also; you can further alter the foot connection either when clipped or un-clipped, by screwing the six steel grip screws.  Therefore; you can have your feet locked down as you want to and at the same time still get good impact and pedaling support.

Reliability is one of Crank brothers pedals strong points. Especially for the pedals that they’ve been designing recently. Moreover; The Mallet E pedals are available for you in eight different versions starting from the elementary level E11 to limited edition version and world champion version.

5. Shimano PD-M530

Most Economic Pedal

Shimano PD-M530 pedal
  • Color: Black
  • Axle size: 9/16″
  • Weight: 455 g/ pair
  • Wing material: N/A
  • Number of pins: N/A
  • Axle material: CrMo steel

  • Pedal material: Aluminum outer body construction
  • Bearing: Cup-and-cone style sealed cartridge bearing
  • Uses:  You can use it on almost any type of trail bike, including hardtail up to 6 inches of travel

Features & Considerations:

  • Price: When it comes to the price of this pedal, you don’t have to worry at all. So; this is one of Shimano’s most economic pedals or any bike pedal in general for that matter. Therefore; if you’re in for a clip-in mountain bike pedal, then this is one of the first bike pedals that you should consider, worth buying.
  • Weight: As of its weight, this pedal happens to be much heavier than it looks. Since, when we weighed it, the scale showed a reading of 455 grams, approximately. However; the weight should not be too much of an issue for you when deciding to buy this otherwise low-key and well-performing bike pedal. Although; you might have a second thought if you plan on installing this pedal on your cross-country bike. Therefore; if the weight of the pedal is the determining factor for you when deciding to but a pair of pedals, then we’re afraid you might have to look elsewhere.
  • Ease of exit: This has to be one of your biggest concerns, more so if you happen to be a relatively new cyclist or even for an experienced user at using clip-less pedals. However; with the M530, you won’t have to worry about this mechanism, at all. Irrespective of the type of shoe you use. Since these pedals are very easy to get in and out as well.
  • Ease of entry: So; the process of getting into your pair of pedals should not be a tedious task at all. Thus; this pedal allows you pretty straightforward and fast entry so that you can start putting the power down as quickly as possible. Moreover; the small cage means, you can effortlessly clip into the pedal. Also; the cage has been designed in such a fashion so that you can easily guide your foot into the clip-less system so that it’d provide you seamless entry. Additionally; as you’d engage your shoe to the cage of the pedal, it’d ensure that the pedal remains flattened against your foot. Thus; helps in placing the clip-less system in the perfect spot to clip-in. Lastly; if you’re new to clip-less pedals, then this might just be the pedal you should be looking for, as you can easily clip-in and un-clip frequently.
  • Adjust-ability: Similar to other SPD mountain-bike pedals, these pedals also have a very wide range of adjustment for spring tension. So; this ranges from a very firm one to relatively soft. Therefore; you can seamlessly adjust the tension using a 3 mm wrench on any side of the pedal. Also, we’d recommend that you make tensions on both sides, the same, by twisting the adjuster all the way possible to one given direction.
  • Pedal platform: M530 doesn’t have any traction pins or mini-platform. So; this platform would allow you a faster and more confident engagement. Additionally; this pedal would also provide you with a footrest, in-case; you aren’t able to clip in promptly. Moreover; the section you’d get between the pedal and the show is much bigger than the one you’d get with a non-platform pedal. Although; the platform on this pedal may turn out to be a bit slippery when it gets wet. Thus; changing how you’d feel on your float.
  • Ability to shred mud: The more significant and painted-cage body of this pedal holds a significantly more mud than that of the higher-end version of Shimano. However; we are reasonably satisfied with this pedal’s performance. The significantly large spacing and comparatively concealed spring mechanism give this pedals a chance with being able to displace mud.

Some drawbacks:

  • Usage with stiff shoes: You should be aware of not using a pair of still shoes with this bike pedal. Because; this may cause the bike pedal to get worn out easily. Moreover; the cage of this pedal drops away from the front and rear. Thus; you won’t have any toe support. However; it is still made quite easy for you to make a flip-kick for engaging. Also; this pedal would provide you with a bit of protection from any potential impact as well.

The Shimano PD-M530 has a similar mechanism and axle system as that of the previous 520. Also; this is a mid-sized bike platform cage bike pedal. The cage on this pedal drops away from the front and rear. Thus; you won’t be getting any toe support. However; you will still be able to flip kick round for engaging. This pedal should also be able to provide you with a bit of impact protection as well, in front of the mechanism. Therefore; all the mentioned criteria make the M530  more suited to being used in rough trail usage along with a flat-soled DH shoe. The exit and entry into the pedals are also significantly tighter if compared to previous models.

Also; the 3D float has been reduced, this depends a lot on the type of shoe you’ll be using. Moreover; the 15 mm wrench axle and serviceable bearings and are ruthlessly reliable and user-friendly. So; this adjustable mechanism is very consistent to use, provided that you don’t let your cleats wear out too much. However, the cleat/float option would be very limited.

6. Crankbrothers Doubleshot

Hybrid pedal + Premium Bearings & Seals

No products found.

Crankbrothers have manufactured Doubleshot to comply with your needs of both clip-less or platform bike pedals. Also; the Doubleshot, like a few other bike pedals out there, has a slightly concave and coarse surface.  Therefore; on one side of the pedal you’d have a pedal with a flat texture. Whereas; the other side consists of an egg-beater clip-less system. Moreover; these pedals have a stylish and attractive appearance and it is also very thin, compared to other bike pedals. However; it won’t be able to offer you any forms of adjust-ability. Lastly; the flat platform the pedal would be a bit slippery if you happen to navigate along rough terrains, on a rainy day. Furthermore; you’d find these pedals in different modules such as Doubleshot 1, 2, and 3; with each having a different price range and features.

7. Shimano XT PD-M8000 XC SPD

Good Stability & Adjust-ability

Shimano XT PD-M8000 pedals
  • Color: Black
  • Weight: 340 g/ pair
  • Axle size: 9/16″
  • Wing material: N/A
  • Number of pins: N/A
  • Uses: MTB Cross Country
  • Axle material: CrMo steel
  • Dimension: 7.9″ x 3.2″ x 1.6″
  • Pedal material: Stainless steel
  • Bearing: Cup-and-cone style loose ball bearings
  • Style of the pedal: Enduro clip-less bike-pedal
  • Included cleats: SPD SM-SH56 2-holed cleat

Features & Considerations:

  • Stability: The M8000 would provide you with good stability. Because; this pedal has a relatively wide and low platform height.
  • Adjustability: While using these pedals, you’d easily be able to adjust the entry and exit tension settings.
  • Pedal spindle: This pedal is equipped with a robust, long-lasting Chromoly spindle which has an 8 mm hex wrench mount.
  • Ability to shed mud:  It has been designed so that mud and dirt from the pedals can be shed with relative ease.
  • Ease of entry and exit: The well-built claws for retention would provide smooth engagement and release from these pedals.

Some drawbacks:

  • Not recommended for a fixed gear: We’d say that this pedal would suit very well for mountain or road bike usage. However; for fixie bikes, it won’t last very long. The spring tension wore out after we used it for a few months.

The M8000 would provide you with an increased pedal-to-shoe contact ratio. Also; the width of the M8000‘s pedal body is approximately 59.2 mm. Moreover; the M8000 is built from stainless-steel alloy, weighing 343 g. Furthermore; these bike pedals are one of the most durable mountain bike pedals, you’ll find. Also; these pedals have a serviceable internal bearing design.

Additionally; to be precise, this pedal has gained almost 8% contact area between the shoe and pedal. This is primarily due to the increase in platform size. Also; the stack height has decreased in size. Hence, this will bring you closer to the axle body. Therefore; all this will aid in getting enhanced stability.

Although; the mud-shedding ability of this pedal cannot be considered to be best out there.  If either your shoes or pedals are congested with muck, it will require your intervention. But, when it comes to entry and exiting these bike pedals, you should not be too worried. Because; the process was pretty straightforward. Also; you’d have to apply a consistent amount of pressure to unclip the pedal.

8. Shimano Deore XT M8020 SPD

Epitomizes Performance

Shimano PD-M8020 pedals
  • Color: Silver
  • Weight: 404 g/ pair
  • Axle size: 9/16″
  • Wing material: N/A
  • Number of pins: N/A
  • Uses: All-Mountain bikes
  • Axle material: CrMo steel
  • Dimension: 7.9″ x 3.2″ x 1.6″
  • Pedal material: Aluminum alloy body
  • Spring Material: Allen-bolt tension spring
  • Bearing: Cup-and-cone style loose ball bearings
  • Style of the pedal: Enduro clip-less bike-pedal
  • Included cleats: Multi-angle release SM-SH51 SPD cleats

Features & Considerations:

  • Weight: You’ll find that these pedals are not the lightest out there. However; you should be judging them strictly based on their gram count. Also; you won’t be able to remove their trimmed axle and threaded bearings using a standard 15 mm pedal removing wrench.  Although; these pedals would be Enduro worthy.
  • Platform: The machined surface of this pedal would be able to provide you with a slightly greater surface area compared to other variants of Shimano‘s pedals. Thus; it would give you stability and reassurance while you’re navigating. Although; we would not suggest that you use this while attempting to stand on it. Furthermore; we also recommend that you use the stickiest shoes while using this pedal so that you can get the right amount of traction.
  • Ease of exit: Shimano’s pedals are well known for their facility in exiting the pedals. Moreover; the distance between the release and the end of the float is considerably small, reconcilable, and comes with a distinct click. Thus; while you disengage form it, you know it instantly.  Lastly; we’d say, even though this platform happens to be bigger and rugged, but still, we’d not recommend that you stand on it for long periods.
  • Ease of entry: Once again; we should be applauding Shimano‘s pedals for their seamless engagement. Thus; this pedal, also; is no exception. Also; a smaller sized platform means, you won’t have a chance of missing the pedal while you guide your foot into the mechanism. Therefore; once you have successfully engaged, the machined aluminum surface would give you a consistent feeling of resistance, be it wet or dry for that matter.
  • Adjust-ability: This pedals, like many other Shimano’s pedals, doesn’t have traction pins on its platform. Therefore; you would not be able to adjust the amount of hard grip that you’d get on this pedal. Hence; if adjust-ability is a huge deal for you, then we’d suggest you choose a bike pedal that is equipped with traction pins.
  • Ability to shred-mud: The M8020 performs admirably when required to shed mud. Moreover; we were quite surprised by its ability to defy muck. Although; these pedals won’t give you the greasy, clipped-in a smooth surface feel that you’d get in case of some bike pedals.  Also; the lack of smooth coating that you’d experience on the engagement mechanism, along with the coarse machining of the platform, would end up creating a bit more friction in the overall float.

Some drawbacks:

  • Weight: If accommodating a bike pedal that is a bit on the heavier side is an issue for you. Then we’d recommend that you choose a pedal that doesn’t weigh as much as the XT M8020. Since; this weighs in at around 402g, which is comparatively more than some other bike pedals that you may choose from.

The XT M8020 epitomizes performance. Furthermore; this pedal stock up somewhere in between the premium and entry-level bike pedals. Moreover; you’d be getting yourself a bike pedal having very user-friendly features. Shimano has built this pedal, especially for hardcore Enduro riders.

The Shimano XT M8020  offers you a premium quality, sleeker, and a combative bike pedal. Furthermore; this pedal would provide you a comparatively bigger machined platform. Additionally; this pedal has a slim anodized covering and also smooth steel bearings.  Lastly; Shimano gives you a lighter, hard-wearing pedal that would be able to perform admirably in muddy surfaces.

  • Dimension: 6″ x 5″ x 3″

  • Bearing: Cup and cone compact bearing system
  • Uses: Hiking, an outdoor lifestyle, cycling camping, etc
  • Number of pins: 2 in front; 2 in back adjustable traction pins

Features & Considerations:

  • Durability: We used these pair of pedals for a good few months on our bike. So; we must say, they pedals performed smoothly, as they would’ve if they were brand new. Also; after we used for a few months, as you would have expected, these pedals had few scratches on its body. Nonetheless; they pedals still looked good. Moreover; Shimano’s clipless pedals tend to be very low maintenance and that’s also the case for M820.
  • Performance: The M820 would deliver you an outstanding performance. Moreover; this pedal has an extra sturdy construction. Also; unlike many other pedals out there, Saint has a fixed clip-in mechanism. Rather than a clip-loaded one. Thus; it also won’t have too many movable parts to wear out. So; this is exactly what you would like to have on your pedals, while you venture through muddy surfaces. It thin built surface means, you won’t have to worry about the pedal being damaged while being hit with any obstacles.
  • Adjust-ability: Saint is a very adjustable pedal. So; it is quite similar to many other SPD pedals. This pedal has adjustable release tension, which you can easily adjust using a 3 mm Allen key, on either side of the pedal. Furthermore; if you want to ensure that the tension remains equal on all four sides, twist each one as further as possible, in a given direction, and then work backward.
  • Pedal platform: The wide platform of this pedal would allow you to easily set your foot on it comfortably. Moreover; you can easily adjust the release tension using a 3 mm Allen key. Also; while we tested out these pair of pedals, there wasn’t any significant difficulty in getting in and out of these pedals. Furthermore; if security is of huge importance to you, then you can tighten the release tension easily. Lastly; this bike pedal would not shed mud quite well. That is unless you travel through super sticky clay, you can easily stomp them off these pedals and clip your foot on it.
  • Ability to shed mud: While you go for buying a pedal, its ability to properly shed mud is a very important factor. As too much mud accumulation on your pedal and shoe can end up making them useless to be used on your bike. Moreover; we tested these pedals on wet surfaces, they performed very well. Furthermore;  the machined grooves would help you to get the grip on your shoes in wet weather conditions. Also; these grooves aid in clearing the mud accumulated within these pedals.

Some drawbacks:

  • Heavyweight: Compared to many other bike pedals, the Saint weighs significantly more. Thus; if you have trouble using a pedal weighing a bit more than average, then we’d recommend you avoid buying this pedal.

You can feel that Shimano M820 Saint has been well-built when you take it straight out of the box. Moreover; these pedals are quite heavy, weighing in at 550 g. However; these pedals are very slim as well, measures 19 mm, if you measure them from the center. Also; you’ll find that this pedal is significantly wide and the pedal platform has 4 adjustable pins. 2 pins in the front and 2 on the back.

Furthermore; M20 Saint has twin cup and cone bearings support, along with a durable Chromoly steel axle.  Also; the body of this pedal is very well built and well anodized. Moreover; the engagement mechanism is similar to many other Shimano pedals. Lastly; the lock brushes are gold anodized.

10. HT Components T1 clip-less

Very Adjustable

HT Components T1 pedals
  • Axle size: 9/16″
  • Weight: 366 g/ pair
  • Dimension: 8″ x 6″ x 2″
  • Included cleats: X1 cleats
  • Bearing: EVO+ bearing system
  • Uses: For mountain and enduro bikes
  • Axle material: CNC machined CrMo
  • Color: 11 variants of color to choose from
  • Style of the pedal: Enduro clip-less bike-pedal
  • Pedal material: Aluminum extruded / CNC machined
  • Number of pins: 2 grub pins; two front pins on each side

Features & Considerations:

  • Durability: The pedal has two pins on either side, these do not have any usage. Since the clip-in mechanism doesn’t rotate unless you’re wearing super-soft shoes, where the sole won’t flex enough to contact them. Moreover; after extensive usage for many months and also after navigating through muddy surfaces, the pedals still seem to be spinning very smoothly. Although; the Chromoly spindles did show some levels of corrosion. However; the pedals aren’t entirely water-resistant. Also; it would not be too difficult for you to disassemble these pedals, but you’d require an 8 mm socket.
  • Performance: HT has built its own clip-in mechanism spring-loaded designed system. Moreover; this pedal has a wire bail in the front, rather than a metal plate. As commonly seen in other SPD-compatible designs of pedals. You should not that the T1‘s aren’t SPD compatible. Therefore; you’d need to use HT’s cleats for you to clip-in and clip-out properly.
  • Adjustability: The T1 has adjustable release tension, height adjusting grub pins, and also it would be able to offer you lateral float. Furthermore; the T1 is very adjustable, it’s adjustable release tension has a greater amount of range than many other bike pedals. Also; when these pedals are at their lightest settings,  they release effortlessly. You can easily alter the release tension using a 3 mm Allen key, while at the same time you drastically change the pedal’s feel. Additionally; with the T1 you would be able to get float of 4-8º. T1’s cleats look a bit wide and chunky compared to other SPD cleats. Although; they did not seem to cause any major issues while we tested out the shoes.
  • Pedal platform: A wide platform would provide you with durable storage for your foot. Moreover; the width of the aluminum body underfoot would feel considerable and is very stable under different conditions. Additionally; the grub pins would help in aligning the pedal while kicking in for entry.
  • Ability to shed mud: T1 performs very well when it comes to shedding mud. Also; the wide pedal design ensures that mud isn’t stored anywhere. Moreover; an additional movement of this pedal would be able to make a solid connection, even if mud is jammed into the cleats.

Some drawbacks:

  • Delay while un-clipping: While un-clipping, you require a significant amount of time, if we compare this to other Shimano’s pedals.

The H1 T1 looks quite similar to Shimano’s XT 8020. However; when it comes to the mechanics and the way it works, it is very different, especially considering the 0n-trail feel you’d get.  So; one of the major differences between the two pedals is that H1 T1  used a specific cleat design, that has a broader rear shelf Moreover; it would not work with SPD compatible cleats. But the toe-down, step-in feels is very similar to SPD. Since, both the front and rear jaws are spring-loaded, and it clicks very firmly into place. Additionally; you can easily adjust the tension and the overall range is also higher than average.

Furthermore; the release on this pedal feels very different. It has increased spring resistance right through the float. Getting used to this pedal may take some time for you, more so if you happen to be a newbie. Thus; if you’re new to cycling we’d suggest you go for a flat pedal. Moreover; the 68 mm wide cage would give you a praiseworthy side and also; some mid-foot support. You can choose a color from their 11 different anodized colors. Also; when it comes to reliability of the bearings and needle bearings, they serve admirably. Lastly; the Ti axle version helps in reducing the weight even further.

Also; the spindle had a lot of grease on it. Moreover; the bearings were in good condition as well.
  • Performance: If you’ve used an SPD style clipless pedal before, then getting used to the V-twins would be easier for you. Also; there is a varying degree of adjustable spring tension. When these pedals are at their tightest condition, it would offer a greater amount of resistance than Shimano pedals. So; this would help you a great deal if you have trouble keeping your foot locked in position.
  • Adjust-ability: DRM made the V-twin to be personalized for traction, grip as well as engagement. So; the mechanism for engagement is based on SPD pedals. Moreover; it would be able to offer you 15 clicks, starting from low to high tension. Also; 7 bolts hold the bumpers on each side. Furthermore; you can easily interchange these bolts with traction pins.
  • Pedal platform: The V-twin has a significantly large platform for your foot to aim at while riding. Also; you can wear soft-soled shoes for the larger surface underfoot.
  • Ability to shed mud: Mud clearance on these pedals are pretty good. Also; those time when we had difficulty in clipping-in, a few solid kicks was all that was required to clear the mud off the bottom of the shoe.

Some drawbacks:

  • Value: The V-twin is quite large but they are quite adjustable.  However; these pair of pedals do cost quite a lot.

The V-twin would offer you excellent contact and features for connection. Although; if compared to other bike pedals, this would not exactly be the most durable bike pedal out there. Moreover; the burly alloy made cage would offer you reasonable sideways support. Also; this pedal comes with plastic bumpers on both ends, you can adjust these according to your required foot gap. Furthermore; there are a total of 7 pins for grip, you can easily screw these in or out, whether you’re clipped in or out.

Moreover; the SPD style mechanism pivots within the body making sure your toe-in engagement is very easy. Easy release and float are very similar to Shimano’s pedals. Also; these work well with SPD cleats.
